What is IP

Internet protocol, developed in the 1970’s, is the set of techniques used by many hosts for transmitting data over the Internet. Internet protocol is what is known as a "best effort" system, meaning that no packet of information sent over it is assured to reach its destination in the same condition it was sent – which is why other protocols such as the Transport Control Protocol (TCP) are used in conjunction with it for high priority data.

IP supports unique addressing for computers on a network. Every device connected to a network, be it a local area network (LAN) or the Internet, is given an Internet protocol number. This IP address is used to identify the device uniquely amongst all of the other devices connected to the network.

Features

  • Routing packets to different networks
  • Managing connectivity to networks
  • Providing Internet Protocol security (also known as IPSec) so information remains private
  • Reducing network bandwidth where possible
  • Applying priority of service specifications to traffic

Benefits

  • Has 'Good Failure Recovery' so your systems can retain some functionality in the event of failure
  • Fast sharing of information, package mobility and messaging, cross-platform networking is made possible
  • Has a low data overhead
  • Security of communications
