TPSTPS or Telephone Preference Service helps you make sure your telephone number is no longer available to organisations who may telephone you with offers and information you do not wish to receive. This is achieved by simply registering with TPS and as such, TPS can enable you to drastically reduce the number of unsolicited calls received.TPS was introduced as a result of Government legislation making it unlawful to make unsolicited direct marketing calls to individuals stating they do not wish to be contacted. What TPS provides is a single point of contact so that by registering with TPS, all such calls can be stopped and TPS can therefore reduce the amount of nuisance calls received with minimum effort on your part. Although TPS does provide an excellent service, it should be noted that by registering with TPS you are blocking all organisations (including charities and voluntary organisations) and as such registering your number with TPS may stop a number of calls being placed that you might actually want to receive that would be connected without TPS. Registering with TPS may prevent you from receiving information that may be of interest and may therefore cut you off from potentially worthwhile opportunities. Also in the case of charities, registering with TPS reduces the effectiveness of their telemarketing which is an economical way to raise awareness and support. Again, TPS will stop telemarketing calls from all companies, charities and voluntary organisations and TPS will even stop those that may regard you as a customer. To avoid this, rather than registering with TPS, companies who you do not wish to hear from should be contacted directly to have your details removed from their call lists. Registering with TPS would be akin to contacting ALL companies and organisations to request this! TPS can also accept the registration of mobile telephone numbers, however registering these numbers with TPS will not prevent the receipt of SMS messages. Whilst TPS can screen telemarketing calls, companies sending SMS messages should have received prior approval and therefore it is not required by law for these organisations to check TPS prior to sending.
